Testing where there is no Centre
In Kilifi, there are many villages that do not have access to health care including HIV testing centres.
This can prove to be a major challenge in our fight to prevent the spread of HIV on our communities. Hovever, with the help of the Ministry of Health, SCOPEs Home Testing Program is over coming this challenge.
Mr. Kitsao lives with his two wives and five children in a small village called Ngerenya in Bahari division, Kilifi is for from any Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centre (VCT). None of the family had ever been tested for HIV so when a SCOPE/Ministry of Health trained VCT Counselor came to visit, he was very keen to take the opportunity of the test.
First, below, you see the Counselor explaining to Mr. Kitsao about HIV and what happens in the test, followed by a quick and simple blood test.
The results are shown to Mr. Kitsao and you can see from the below picture, he is happy with the result!

After the test, he asks the counselor to test the rest of his family. Testing in a family environment has produced some excellent results, especially regarding disclosure and acceptance as families who test together, prove to be a lot more likely to deal with the results together.
