How we work in HIV/AIDS prevention and care

Coast Province, where SCOPE is based, has been rated 3rd with prevalence rate of 8.1% as per the Kenya National AIDS Strategic plan 2009/10 – 2012/2013.

Clearly, this  is one of the main issues facing coastal communities.  In addition to the lives taken by the virus, AIDS has left a huge community of orphaned children, significant stigma problems for PLWHA and there remains a significant population at risk of infection.

SCOPE is involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Kilifi district on a number of levels. Our aims are two fold

  1. To promote reduction of risky behavior among the general population
  2. To encourage use of available high quality services

Here is how we work:

  1. Peer Education:  SCOPE has trained over 200 Peer Educators, 201 Ambassadors of Change (youth peer educators), 23 Magnet Theater (education through theatre) and 31 Peer Counselors within our communities.  Peer Education is a much used and successful approach to promote behavior change and improve awareness of RH, HIV/AIDS, encourage people to find out their status and reduce the impact of stigma on the people living with the virus. In addition to training, SCOPE also organizes Peer Educator meetings and Monitor and Evaluate impact of activities.
  2. Community Outreach and Condom distribution: SCOPE organize and take part in community outreach events giving the community access to a range of health services including HIV/AIDS testing services, TB testing, vaccinations etc most of this activities are done in collaboration with the ministry of health to qualify for integrated and holistic services.  In addition, SCOPE distributes both male and female condoms throughout strategic locations in the community.
  3. Home testing: Home Testing allows families to get tested as a family and encourages partners to know each others status.  Home testing is proving a highly successful way for couples and families to access VCT services. SCOPE work closely with Peer Educators, community health workers and local administration to ensure maximum impact in the community.
  4. Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT): SCOPE provide mobile VCT services. VCT is a critical activity to both ensure community members get to know their status and also to ensure positively tested individuals get access to both counseling, care, treatment and support services.
  5. Education: Including Peer Education programmes and Community Outreach activities, SCOPE is actively educating the community on sexual health particularly with the youth in our communities.  To this end, SCOPE is working with local schools to run Smart Youth Clubs to empower youth to abstain from sex before marriage and educate them on maintaining their sexual health though life skills and mentor-ship.
