How the food program works

From Food Distribution to Home Testing to Sustainable Livelihood to Healthy, sustainable living!

We believe that it is essential that the programs we manage and implement are sustainable and none more so than the Food Distribution Program.  SCOPE have with our partners designed the program to ensure that there is reduced reliance of food handouts and have successfully mainstreamed family testing and business training to the program.

Home testing in Bamba

So far SCOPE has reached over 1000 people using this approach, tested over 400 families and trained 23 HIV/AIDS support groups!

These are the steps we take:

  1. Food is delivered to Kilifi by the World Food Programme. We register delivery and check correct quantity has arrived
  2. Every Index Client – that is a Person Living with HIV/AIDS with a low Body Mass Index – is registered using a card a thumb print and is assigned a quantity of food based on their household size.
  3. Using the cards, we measure out the approved food quantities for each Index Client of the four main food types to distributed
  4. The Index Client takes their food home to their household.  A month’s food can be quite a lot so it’s quite often a challenge.
  5. It is important that we follow up with the clients to ensure that they are using the food as prescribed and its not been shared to too many people (if it is, the nutritional benefits to the Index Client is reduced and therefore, the impact of the programme is reduced)
  6. The Food Distribution team at SCOPE work closely with our HIV/AIDS Home testing team.  This merging of programmes is an excellent way to test a household for HIV/AIDS.
  7. Finally, each Index Client is linked to a HIV/AIDS support group that as well as supporting them psychologically, gives them access to Business Development Skills Training by SCOPE.
